No doubt, 2025 will be a bumper year for vintage on the red carpets — if the Old Hollywood influences at the Golden Globes were any indication!
Vintage dealers expect celebrities to embrace archival while incorporating on-trend styles, predicting oxblood and ostrich feathers, and menswear suiting.
From gowns by the master couturiers to ‘no-label’ looks from the 1930s, these are nine stand-out pieces the experts want to see on the red carpet:
Sheryl Roberts, Indigo Style Vintage
Sheryl Roberts, former fashion model turned vintage seller, hopes to see this 2010 Christian Dior ball gown, which is on-trend in oxblood.
Or, she’d like to see this spring/summer 1998 Givenchy, designed by Alexander McQueen, worn by a “young starlet, model or music artist” — we love!
Her final vintage fashion prediction is from spring/summer 1999 — this YSL suit is also on trend with all the menswear dressing of the moment. Maybe for Ayo Edebiri’s next suiting moment?
Emily McKay, NYC-based stylist
NYC-based stylist, Emily McKay, is likewise eager for some Alexander McQueen designed looks to be revisited. She writes: “A favorite are the houndstooth looks from fall/winter 2009, especially look one. I would love to see this on a British star (feels fitting!). Florence Pugh would be gorgeous, or Adele.”
Actress and presenter, Laverne Cox, wore a look from McQueen’s ‘Horn of Plenty’ collection at the InStyle Imagemaker Awards last year. Cox is a legendary vintage collector, with a 500-piece Mugler archive — but, lately she’s been stepping out in some McQueen!
Chelsea Von Mach, LA’s “The Store”
Chelsea writes: “This 1950s Philip Hulitar gown is meant for a red carpet. The black satin, with its intricate devore rose pattern, is breathtaking. And that bustle? It's pure drama & sophistication! It's insane how modern this dress feels – it could easily walk a Dolce & Gabbana runway today.”
She’d love to see Pamela Anderson wear it, letting the dress be the star since she’s going makeup-less — which we love!
Up next, Chelsea writes: “To me there is nothing more beautiful than a no-label 1930's silk and velvet gown. The 1930's is one of the most well dressed time periods, and my very favorite time period for gowns.”
“I think we will be seeing more and more label-less vintage on the red carpet because the designer archive has been done over a bunch of times. I have a vintage mentor that said, ‘the best dresses were always made at the kitchen table.’”
She thinks Cynthia Erivo could make this dress very modern with her edge, or Emma Stone could bring it to life with her new Mia Farrow-esque pixie cut. “Oh one more! Gia Coppola (director of The Last Showgirl) would be very well suited in this gown — gah, actually she would be perfect!”
Finally, Chelsea selects her newest acquisition — a two-piece Jacques Fath gown. She writes, “I've always wanted to own a Jacques Fath because he was considered one of three dominant influences on post-war haute couture, the others being Christian Dior and Pierre Balmain.”
These gowns, apparently, once belonged to the Ferrari family — and mother and daughter wore them to a gala together. Chelsea would love to see them worn by Angelina Jolie or Elle Fanning — or maybe by a mother-daughter duo!
Amanda Samuel, Collective Good Shop
Amanda Samuel loves feathers, making this 1960s Arnold Scassi ivory ostrich feather gown an obvious choice. She writes: “This dress feels very modern and of the moment — with the drop waist and the rich satin juxtaposed with the ostrich feathers; creating beautiful texture & elegance which screams ‘red carpet.’ Not to mention Arnold Scassi dressed many movie stars in his day.”
Amanda would love to see this look on Anya Taylor-Joy or Zoe Saldaña.
Or, this Madam Grès Autumn/Winter 1976 Haute Couture gown, which she’d like to see worn by Zendaya or Zoë Kravitz. “The craftsmanship of her work is unimaginable. The pleating and draping is beyond anything. This is a master couturier with Grecian inspiration, and the look would just rival a Greek Goddess — that's what the red carpet should be!”
