Alright, so you all know I love the Fisherman Aesthetic, but what about its spring-time equivalent — I hear she’s called the “Coastal Beatnik?” I first read
talking about the Coastal Beatnik on Substack, inspired by this TikTok montage, which is moodily (perfectly!) set to Neil Young's “Old Man.”The original creator says the vibe is:
“Inspired by my dad living in Venice Beach in the 70’s and playing in jazz bands all over the city. Inspired by my move from the city to a beach town and feeling not quite laid back enough in my personal style.
Inspired by looking for fellow musicians and artists at the local dive every weekend. Inspired by walking the shore alone and coming up with new poetry. Wearing black at the beach obviously. A house where music is always playing and incense is always burning. Not having a ton of money but making it work.”
In my mind, it’s a little bit Coastal Grandma (à la a domestic Diane Keaton) meets Chic Desert Aunt — think salt air, meets intellectual flair, meets beachside dive bar. Linen-clad poets, sandy feet and sun-kissed noses. Both coasts represented. There’s paint splatters and picnics, and we’re collecting seaglass and good stories.
And a look this lived-in just has to be vintage, you know what I mean?
So, Pre-Loved readers, I’ve found you 77 vintage pieces (sizes XS-XXL), under $100 — so you can sit and watch the tides come in in style this season.
Below the paywall: perfectly visibly-mended French chore coats, hickory stripe overalls, embroidered linen blouses, the coziest heather gray vintage sweatshirts, jute market totes, 70s ringer tees… enjoy!
